Natural Remedies: Fruit & Root Tea

Well… it’s cold and flu season again…yay… can you sense my sarcasm?

If you’ve got school age children you are bound to get sick at least once this season! You may be able to dodge it with an hourly ritual of hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray, a paper mask and quarantining your kids to their rooms, but chances are the sneezing, sniffling, coughing and a pile of tissue will be in your future.

This season Mr. D ( my hubby) got it bad! He recently was plagued with a bad cold that developed into viral bronchitis! One of the natural home remedies that he used to kick his “cold” to the curb was our Fruit & Root Tea! (*Please note: This remedy was used to assist the doctor prescribed medication and should not be used to replace the proper medication.)

What’s in it you ask?
This “Miracle Tea” has 4 powerful natural ingredients:

Lemon – The fruit in our Fruit & Root Tea, is an amazing fruit full of antioxidants that detoxifies, ramps up your vitamin C which stimulates your white blood cell production which is an important part of a healthy functioning immune system!

Garlic – One of the root ingredients in this tea, is a super food and is also an antioxidant that can assist in boosting your immune system. The compound Allicin, found in Garlic is responsible for its “magical” medicinal abilities.

Ginger – The second root ingredient in our tea, and is also a powerful antioxidant  containing the substance Gingerol which is known to aid in digestion, sooth an upset stomach, relieve muscle pain, and that’s just to name a few!

Natural Organic Honey – Although honey is not a fruit nor a root ingredient, it has some amazing health benefits. It is an antioxidant ( we know what that means), an anti-inflammatory, an energy & memory booster, it promotes new cell production in your lungs and best of all a cough suppressant!

Now… if you want to ramp up the potent power of this miracle tea (as if its not potent enough!) try adding some onion! Cousin to garlic, onion is also a root “vegetable” that contains the same compound Allicin.

Mr. D, swears by this concoction and so do I! Give it a try and let me know how it worked for you! Remember, if any of the ingredients are a little to strong for your taste you can add a little less, the recipe below is based on the taste buds of my family… including my kids!!

Evolution of a Mom's Fruit & Root Tea
  • 1 1/2 inch ginger root
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 tbsp onion (optional)
  • Raw Organic Honey
  • loose leaf tea steeper
  • your favourite mug

  1. Start by chopping garlic and set aside. ( This helps get the juices flowing and the good stuff going!!) Alternatively, you can use a garlic press.
  2. Peel ginger, then grate or lightly chop.
  3. Using the palm of your hand, roll the lemon on the counter while adding pressure. (This helps release the juices and makes it easier to squeeze).
  4. Boil your water.
  5. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze juices from both halves into your mug
  6. Place chopped ginger, crushed garlic, and onion (if using onion) in a loose leaf tea steeper and place it in your mug
  7. Add boiling water to your mug
  8. Allow your tea steep for 5-7 mins.
  9. Add honey to taste ( I recommend no less than 3 tbsps)
  10. Sip and finish before it reaches room temperature!
  11. Drink at least once a day!
